In dry-type transformers, cooling and insulation are handled not by oil but by air together with solid insulation materials. The thermal class of the winding conductor therefore directly determines the machine's rated power and overload window. Aramid paper insulation allows continuous operation at Class 220 (R), enabling a higher temperature rise in the same physical size.

Aramid paper largely retains its dielectric properties when it takes up moisture, resists charring under fire conditions and does not support flame propagation — the technical reasons dry-type units are preferred in enclosed spaces. Aluminium conductor is used where weight is critical and copper conductor where window area is limited. Aramid papers are assessed under IEC 60819.
