In oil-type power transformers the insulation system relies on paper and oil working together. The cellulosic paper wound onto the conductor draws oil into its pores once the tank is vacuum-treated and filled; because oil replaces the air voids, the onset of partial discharge is pushed to higher voltage levels. Winding-conductor selection must therefore be planned together with the drying and impregnation process.
In practice, flat kraft paper is used in the linear winding sections, while crepe paper is used at tight-radius transitions such as lead-outs and tap connections. In plants where overload capacity is critical, thermally upgraded Satinert paper is preferred; by slowing the ageing of the cellulose it allows operation at Class 130 (B). Papers are supplied to IEC 60554 and copper conductors to EN 13601.
