Generator windings operate under both high voltage and high mechanical stress. The high current density in stator bars requires the cross-section to be split into parallel conductors and transposed to limit eddy-current losses. Flat conductors with mechanically robust insulation are therefore used.
Glass-fibre braid insulation is well suited to the vacuum-pressure impregnation process: the varnish penetrates the braid and, after curing, the winding becomes a monolithic block. On high-voltage bars, mica tape provides partial-discharge endurance; mica-based insulation materials are assessed to the IEC 60371 series.
