Wind turbine generators operate under continuous vibration, variable load and a wide temperature range. The winding insulation must be robust not only dielectrically but also mechanically; otherwise vibration causes insulation wear and turn displacement over time. Composite structures combining polyimide film with glass-fibre wrap meet both requirements in a single product.
Offshore and coastal sites add moisture and salt load. Aramid-insulated nacelle transformers are preferred because they largely retain their dielectric properties in humid environments. Because of weight limits in the nacelle, aluminium conductor is also common; this choice is evaluated together with cross-section growth and cooling-channel design.
